Don’t: Use Harsh Materials to Clean Your Flooring

When you clean your natural stone flooring, always use either terry cloth or microfiber towel. You do not want to rub your floor down with an abrasive material that could potentially damage it. When you are choosing a cleaner, choose one with a neutral PH so that you are not damaging your flooring. Make sure that you clean up all water and soap as soon as your floor is clean.

Do: Protect Your Floor

There are a number of things you can do to protect your floor. For example, our stone sealing services help reduce the size of the pores in your floor. In turn, your flooring cannot absorb as much liquid or pollutants. Use protective items to further keep it safe. For example, if your flooring carries up to a ledge on which people sit, make sure they are using coasters if they are placing glasses on the flooring, and provide trivets if they have hot dishes.

Don’t: Allow Acidic Substances to Come into Contact with the Flooring

Acidic and alkaline substances can damage your stone in just second. This includes a number of cleaners but it also includes natural substances such as vinegar and lemon juice. Wine is another acidic / alkaline substance that should never be anywhere near your floor. If a glass is spilled, wipe it up right away with a microfiber or terry cloth.

Do: Prevent Dirt and Dust from Being Tracked onto Your Floor

When you think about reasons to keep dirt and dust from being tracked onto your floor, you likely think about how much you do not want to have to sweep it up. Did you know that sweeping up dirt and other abrasive substances could actually damage your floor? Likewise, walking over dirt and dust can damage it. We recommend placing rugs or mats at entry ways so that dirt, sand, and other substances are trapped. You can also ask guests to remove their shoes before walking on the flooring.

Don’t: Trust Old Wives’ Tales

There are many things that legend has it will help clean your natural stone flooring. For example, you may hear that nail polish, hair spray, or even hair color can help clean up or repair damaged or dirty natural stone. This is false. If in doubt about what cleaners or substances to use, contact Fuller Stone Care. We can come clean and repair your floors for you.
