Marble Countertops: Learn the Pros and Cons to Decide for Yourself

As is true of just about any substance that may be used for countertops, there are both pros and cons to using marble. At Fuller Stone Care we love the look of freshly restored and polished marble but we also know that marble is not the right choice for all countertops. Let us consider today what both the advantages and disadvantages are of choosing marble.

Pro: Marble countertops are beautiful

One of the most common reasons people site for choosing marble is the fact that it is beautiful. It is a lovely way to display unique colors of solid whites, solid blacks, and a variety of colors in between. Every slab of marble is unique which allows homeowners to show off their own unique style.

Pro: Marble is heat resistant

Marble is good for kitchens due to the fact that it is so heat resistant. It can stand up to hot pots and pans. If used as a bathroom counter, it can stand up to the use of curling irons, straighteners, and other hot beauty products. People even choose it to use around their fireplace because it will not yellow with heat.

Con: Marble is porous

More porous than granite, marble can absorb liquids. This means that if you spill juice, win, oil, etc. on the surface, it can penetrate quickly and they can be hard to remove. Even if you are only planning on using marble in the bathroom, there are things that could stain it there like nail polish and liquid makeup. The good news is that marble can be sealed to help prevent stains from being an issue.

Con: It can be scratched

One of the main reasons that a person worries about installing marble countertops is the fact that they can so easily be marred. For example, if used in the kitchen, you could end up nicking the surface when using a sharp knife. Though marble can stained up to the heat of a pot, a heavy one could chip the marble or, in a worst case scenario, break off a corner. For this reason, you will find that many marble manufacturers do not offer warranties for marble used in kitchens and some installers won’t even install them.
