Learn how to remove and prevent stains on your marble surfaces
Marble can instantly make any space look cool, classy, and upscale. But this effect will be ruined as soon as you get a stain in your marble. Fortunately, you can get your marble looking like new again with these tips.
Using Poultices to Lift Stains
Marble stains because it absorbs liquids into its pores. By drawing the liquid back out of the stone’s pores, you can eliminate or greatly diminish the stain. Most types of stains can be addressed in this way.
What you will need to do is create a poultice by mixing 4 parts water and 1 part stone cleaner with an absorbent material like powdered chalk, talc, whiting, or plaster. Once you have a peanut butter like paste, you can apply it to the stone, covering the stain with a layer about a quarter inch thick extending half an inch past the edges of the stain. Leave it in place for 24 hours, then remove it and see how the stone looks. Bear in mind that oily stains are more difficult to lift and may require more than one application.
Dealing with Acidic Stains
If your stain was caused by an acidic liquid, you will face the additional challenge of etching. Even after you remove the stain, you are going to see a mark where the acid ate away at the marble. To correct etching, you must get professional marble polishing from an expert like Fuller Stone Care.
Prevention is the Best Medicine
The best way to deal with the issue of stains on your marble is to give your stone protection against becoming stained in the first place. This can be accomplished by sealing and resealing the stone using appropriate products. At Fuller Stone Care, we use only the best quality penetrating sealers that provide protection without blocking the pores of your stone completely, which could cause discoloration. Instead, our penetrating sealers reduce the pore size of the stone just enough to give you time to mop up liquids before they are absorbed and create stains. So while sealing doesn’t make your marble stain-proof, it does make stains much less likely to happen if you are taking good care of your stone.
