Your marble should be sealed

Many people wonder if marble needs to be sealed. The short answer is that yes it does. Remember that marble is porous. As a result, anything that’s spilled on it may be absorbed into the stone. There are a number of minerals within the marble that can react to whatever’s spilled on it. for example, spilling a cup of water on the marble may lead to a reaction with the calcium. The end result could be etch marks. Spilling coffee or wine can stain it. However, sealing your marble helps make the pore size smaller, which makes it easier to clean up spills without damage ensuing.

How often to seal and what to seal marble with

There are many sealants on the market but not all of them are for use on marble. You want a sealant that’s penetrates, rather than one that’s topical and simply sits on the surface. The penetrating sealers get into the pores of your stone and will protect it while also allowing it to breath. Then you can choose between oil and water based sealants. They generally work similarly but some clients prefer water based because it’s more eco-friendly and the sealing process is quicker.

As far as how long you need to have your marble sealed, generally speaking we suggest that you have it sealed about once a year. That said, you must also take into consideration the area in which your marble is located. If you have a marble floor in your kitchen or another high-traffic area then it may need to be sealed more often. Likewise, if you have marble in a vacation home that you’re only in a few weeks out of the year then it wouldn’t need to be sealed as often.

Special care instructions for marble shower tiles

If you have marble in your shower then the first thing to know is that you must use a specially formulated cleanser. At Fuller Stone Care, we offer a natural stone cleaner and conditioner that’s great on marble. Don’t use an abrasive cleaner because it could scratch the stone. Don’t use an acidic cleaner (including anything that has vinegar or lemon juice) because it could cause etching. We also recommend that you use a squeegee to get rid of excess moisture from your tile after every shower.

These tips are great ways for you to keep your marble in great shape. If you need more tips, or you have marble that you’d like to have professional cleaned, restored, and / or sealed, please reach out to Fuller Stone Care at 855-205-0972.
