Terrazzo can last for decades with just a little bit of attention from an expert like Fuller Stone Care
Terrazzo may have been allegedly discovered by accident when Italian mosaic artists started sweeping their leftover stone and glass chips onto the terraces of their villas, but since then many residential and commercial property owners have quite purposefully chosen this durable and attractive material.
Terrazzo usually features marble, quartz, granite, or glass chips set in a concrete binder, though other types of stone chips or different epoxy or acrylic binders may sometimes be used. However, despite the possible variations in composition the best strategy for care and maintenance is to treat terrazzo like a marble floor.
You can rely on Fuller Stone Care to meet all your terrazzo care needs. After many years in the stone care business, we know exactly how to apply marble care principles to your terrazzo floors, walls, and countertops to keep them looking pristine for decades to come.
Our Terrazzo Care Services
Cleaning: In general, terrazzo is a very low-maintenance material. However, it does need to be cleaned weekly with a specially formulated cleaning product, which Fuller Stone Care can provide for your use. It may also need occasional deep cleaning or power washing. We have very versatile power washing equipment that can be safely used on terrazzo at low pressure.
Sealing: Though terrazzo looks like a really hard surface, in reality it is made up of porous materials. The terrazzo could therefore absorb liquids and potentially be stained by them. Applying a high-quality sealant to the terrazzo will help make it less absorbent and easier to clean, thereby reducing the risk of stains. If the terrazzo is cement based, it requires a penetrating sealer. If it is an epoxy or acrylic base, penetrating sealer may not be necessary as it will not penetrate these materials anyway. You can rely on Fuller Stone Care to help you select the best product and apply it correctly.
Polishing: For the most part, terrazzo has excellent resistance to scratching. However, it does etch, and if this happens you may need to get your terrazzo polished. Using our state of the art grinding and polishing process, Fuller Stone Care can put a beautiful new honed or polished finish on your terrazzo so you can continue to enjoy it for years to come.
Our Terrazzo Care Tips
- Wipe up spills quickly—especially if the liquid is oily or acidic
- Use doormats inside and outside to capture abrasive dirt, sand, and grit before it gets on your terrazzo
- Use an appropriate terrazzo sealer and reseal every few years
- Never seal your terrazzo without first ensuring it is clean and dry
- Never use abrasive or acidic cleaners—instead look for a neutral pH product designed for stone
- Do not wax your terrazzo floors. Wax may make the surface too slippery, and it can also dull the look of the stone. If you want your terrazzo to look brighter, polish and seal it instead
